Retired Teachers’ Association
Monthly Luncheon
Hello Everyone,
This month’s Luncheon is on March 30th at the North Shore Community Centre (Cottonwood’s). Doors open at 11:30 a.m., business meeting at and lunch is at . The cost is $15.00. The program for this month is a visit from our two bursary recipients as well as the girl who received the RR Smith Bursary. As well it will be the silent auction for CHES – Canadian Harambee Education Society through which we now sponsor Josephina Joseph, a Tanzanian Grade 10 student. The event has been very successful in the past, usually raising enough to pay two years of sponsorship.
We encourage you to bring items or offer services for the auction. Items that receive vigorous bidding in the past have included flower planters (or promise of), baking, home canning, wine, greeting cards, jewellery, paintings, knitting, gift certificates, promises of experiences such as a homemade lunch and computer lessons. Last month several members indicated that delicious and interesting items will be available. You are welcome to place a minimum bid on an item.
When you arrive, bring your items to a distribution table and a volunteer will assist in numbering items and filling out the bid sheets.
If you are unable to make the meeting, but have an item for auction, send it along with another member or phone Pat Petley at 250 828 0075.
If you wish to donate by cheque rather than by bidding there will be information and an envelope at your table so you can donate directly to CHES and receive a tax receipt.
This event is also running in support of the bursary fund.
The Bursary Committee fundraising activities at meetings will be suspended for this meeting.
The manager and the process of catering with some 10 different providers of food have changed. By Wednesday morning I must give a FINAL head count for lunch. So please respond by no later than Tuesday, March 27. I can take cancelations to 10:00 am on Wednesday morning, March 28. This month’s lunch will be chicken souvlaki and salads catered by Minos

TRU BURSARY FOUNDATION
Each year our energetic bursary committee raises funds to put into the TRU Foundation to provide bursaries to atleast two students in the Education Program. As we have over $65 000.00 in the foundation we have been giving two bursaries around $1 300.00. Activities include the monthly draw for a donated Mystery Bag and a spare change collection, Take a Book, Leave a Book as described below, a silent action and possibly a Mystery Tour. Bursary recipients are invited to lunch as guests for our March meeting at which the silent auction is held. Contact Bev Maxwell for more info.
SILENT AUCTION
March 30th luncheon will entertain the 2011 recipients as well as raise funds for the bursary and CHES. Auction items are needed. If you have items you wish to donate but are unable to deliver, please contact Bev Maxwell (250-374-2205 or bjmax@shaw.ca) or Darrel (250-372-3194 or dm.johnson@shaw.ca) to arrange pick up.
C.H.E.S. Sponsorship
Sponsoring a female student to attend school through CHES is another of our yearly responsibilities. Funds are raised through our silent auction which is this year being shared with the bursary funding.
TAKE A BOOK . . . LEAVE A BOOK
The Bursary Committee is sponsoring a "TAKE A BOOK . . . LEAVE A BOOK" table at the KRTA monthly lunch meetings.
To start, bring a book that you have really enjoyed and would recommend to others. At the book table you will find an insert card to fill out with your name and your comment on the book. Then, for a donation of $1.00 you can read the comment cards in other books - who has read them and what others have to say - and choose one to take home and read. Bring it back with your comments the next month and look for another book that is of interest.
HAPPY READING and thanks for helping us
sponsor TRU Education students,
The Bursary Committee :)
Reminder: All archive issues from 2002 to 2006 are now completed and ready for download.
The page was getting rather long so I have added what is called an "Accordian" feature which allows you to click and view whichever year you are interested in.
H0W DO YOU RECEIVE YOUR BRIDGE
Fewer than 170 are now receiving The Bridge by mail. The rest are either picking up a copy at the meeting (OCT and FEB) or reading it on the website. I have a file on my computer of members that do not attend or receive notice of meetings that I send out in February and October to remind members when the new issue has been posted on the website. If you would like to receive such notice and no longer receive a mailed copy, please email me at dm.johnson@shaw.ca . Our website is www.krta.ca.
Our goal is to reduce the cost of our mail out. I have had a couple of our lifetime members who have sent a card with stamps for mailing. That is not necessary as we do have a health bank account that is used for a variety of purposes. Thanks for your support.
EMAIL ADDRESSES
The head office of the BCRTA has started adding email addresses to their data bank which enables them to put out information to members in a more timely fashion if necessary. You can also choose to receive the Postscript online at the BCRTA website at www.bcrta.ca. Please send your email address to Kristi@bcrta.com or pat@bcrta.com .
I also ask that if you change your address and/or email address that you inform the BCRTA and the KRTA. Several have made changes in the last few months and have not given me notice. When I go to send an email it then hangs up in my outbox until I identify the problem address and remove it from my list. As I have been away most of the last three months. My wife removed the names to get email out about meetings. If you are no longer receiving notice and wish to, please notify me at dm.johnson@shaw.ca . I do try to call but also have not got answers.
MEMBERSHIP AND LUNCHEONS
Our membership has grown to 425 members. We received a certificate of recognition at the AGM last fall as we had an increase of 5%.
For our luncheons at the North Shore Community Centre the caterers have been changed several time starting in October. The Manager also changed in December as Dwight Hoglund retired. We have had a real issue with getting an accurate count that is now wanted by Wednesday at noon. Thus, it is important that I have responses from email and phoners by no later than 10:00 Wednesday morning and preferably Tuesday evening. I have some email responses that are perpetually late and I now have to say no unless I have also received a late cancelation.
