The Kamloops branch (KRTA) of the BC Retired Teachers’ Association formed in 1971.

Our membership has continued to grow over the years to the current level of 361 members as of September 2007.  Most of our members taught in the Gold Trail, Kamloops Thompson or Merritt school districts.

The local branch meets monthly on the last Friday of each month except December, June, July and August. We currently meet starting at 11:30 a.m. at the Cottonwood Centre. The meeting provides an opportunity for members to stay in touch with colleagues. Each meeting consists of a business meeting, a catered lunch ($15.00) and a program presentation by a speaker, musical group, etc. Our program list develops from suggestions or requests by our members.  Each spring one of the five interior branches hosts a social meeting. In June, we have a social wind-up meeting that usually is an outdoor event to a local area of interest.

The group has two special projects that we raise funds to support.  We now have over $50,000 in the TRU Foundation. Money raised provides two scholarships ($1200 to $1500 each) to students taking their teacher training at TRU. In the last few years, we have averaged about $1600 being raised by the group.  Many members also give to our fund in the TRU Foundation.

Our second project is support of a girl in Africa to receive her education through the Canadian Harambee Education Society (CHES). CHES has projects in Kenya and Tanzania.  The CHES project in Tanzania was started by a couple who are retired teachers.  Several of our members have visited these sites and/or sponsor a girl on their own. We have raised our yearly fee ($450.00) through a silent auction held during our May meeting.

The KRTA also publishes a newsletter (The Bridge) twice a year in an effort to keep members that are unable to attend informed of our events and various items of general interest.  This activity triggered the development of this web site as a means to get “The Bridge” out to members in a speedy and cost effective way.
